Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Lan Hieu, Director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital, expressed deep concern over this flawed logic, noting that it reflects a widespread misconception treating medical injections as routine wellness supplements.
What Are ‘Brain Tonic’ Injections in Reality?
According to Dr. Nguyen Lan Hieu, ‘brain tonic’ is a colloquial term rather than a formal pharmaceutical category. The medications commonly referred to under this label are indicated only for specific neurological conditions and fall into three primary categories:
- Oxygen-utilization enhancers: Drugs such as Cerebrolysin, Piracetam, and Citicoline, which help brain cells utilize oxygen more effectively.
- Cerebral vasodilators: Agents like Cinnarizine that widen blood vessels in the brain.
- Combination formulations: Medications such as Phezam that combine both vasodilating and metabolic properties.
“In injectable form, these medications improve cerebral blood flow by dilating cranial vessels, while enhancing memory and sleep quality by optimizing oxygen consumption in brain tissues. They can aid recovery and minimize complications following brain surgery, traumatic brain injury, or acute stroke,” Dr. Hieu explained.
However, the expert emphasized that medical associations recommend these injectable drugs only with low levels of clinical evidence, and they are never mandatory first-line therapies. Crucially, no scientific authority recommends routine injections to prevent strokes or boost cognitive function in healthy individuals.

2. Never Solicit Home IV or Injection Services Without Prescription
Calling unofficial healthcare workers to administer home infusions in the hope of improving academic focus, relieving mild dizziness, or warding off stroke is hazardous. Some unverified products lack safety certifications, and unmonitored infusions risk severe circulatory overload or shock.
3. Prefer Oral Medications Whenever Possible
When an individual can swallow and absorb medication normally, oral administration is always the preferred route. Nearly all cognitive support medications are available in oral tablet or capsule forms. Injectable routes are strictly reserved for critical care, acute hospital settings, or cases where the patient is unconscious.
