“Over recent decades, parallel to the rising prevalence of obesity and knee osteoarthritis, the intake of natural, unprocessed foods has steadily diminished. It has been supplanted by industrially processed products laden with artificial flavorings, color additives, and chemically modified compounds,” Dr. Akkaya emphasized.

Deceptive “Healthy” Options in the Ultra-Processed Category

Ultra-processed foods are industrially engineered formulations combining refined sugars, sodium, unhealthy fats, and isolated carbohydrates designed to hyper-stimulate the brain’s reward centers.

However, the danger extends far beyond obvious culprits like soft drinks, hot dogs, fast food, frozen pizzas, and pastries. Many items marketed as wellness staples also fall into this category:

  • Commercial high-protein snack bars packed with synthetic additives and binders.
  • Packaged protein shakes containing artificial sweeteners and stabilizers.
  • Processed “diet” chips and fiber-supplemented snacks.

Protecting Your Muscles and Joints for Longevity

Clinical nutritionists caution that focusing solely on hitting macronutrient targets or remaining in a caloric deficit overlooks how the body reacts to chemical additives and processed ingredients. Regular exercise cannot fully counteract the adverse effects of an ultra-processed diet on muscle architecture.
